Can anyone help with fostering of a litter of kittens - they are not mine, but they have been living in poor conditions, and have had no support during the quakes. I am picking them up tomorrow, but can only have them for a couple of nights at the most. They are most probably sick and I am taking them to the vet tomorrow, paying out of my own money! Please, if there is anyway you can help - possibly suggesting a cheap vet - or even fostering in itself - contact me onestella.sk@hotmail.com
Thank you!

One of my co-workers at Te Whare Roimata, Chris, suggested a fundraising idea if anyone would like to run with it: All the accumulated bricks could be purchased for $20 and sent around New Zealand as a fundraiser.paganz2000 (10/03/2011 at 04:05pm)

I have been volunteering in Lyttelton now for a week. We had a great idea today. There are water tanks all around the city dispensing water to people who still don't have it. They still have to boil this water, though, or put harmful chlorine in the water. Our idea is to have a SteriPen at every water tank site, so that people can quickly sterilize the water they get from the tanks for drinking. I bought one in Dunedin before coming here, and it works a treat. You can find them on TradeMe. The ones which require 4 batteries to run are best, because they are much faster. Each one costs about $200 or so. I bought mine from Bivouac in Dunedin. They have a website too: www.bivouac.co.nz If there is enough interest in this idea, I can organize someone to get a list of all the water tank locations, and other people to deliver them and show people how it works. For Volunteers near Ashburton: Clean up buses heading to Christchurch this weekend and next.Mr Lawson has been inundated with offers of help from businesses wanting to help in the clean-up from the 6.3 magnitude earthquake.
Mr Lawson said he had been contacted by two bus companies, both Pearsons and Beckleys, with offers of buses and drivers to transport the volunteers to Christchurch.
He had also received donations of food, hand sanitisers, eight mini-diggers, the Ashburton Trust's courtesy van and $1000 worth of spades and shovels from Mitre 10 Mega.
The volunteer army will head to Christchurch today and tomorrow and will work in with the volunteer student army which is already working hard to clean up the quake-ravaged streets of Christchurch.
Anyone wanting to be part of the volunteer army is asked to meet at Robbie's Bar and Bistro car park at 8am today and tomorrow. People must bring their own lunch and drink, as well as shovels, spades and gumboots.
The group will also take containers of water through and anyone unable to make it but wanting to donate water can take it to Phil at Smiths City.
Mr Lawson said the clean-up would not be completed in one weekend so he was planning to head north with an army of volunteers again next weekend.

I am very happy to report that I have an offer for a ride from the airport to Lyttelton on Sunday. This is a lovely site, and I will be sure to promote it to the folks in Lyttelton when I get there, so more of us who want to help can connect with people who need us.NigelfromNewZealand (25/02/2011 at 09:35pm)

I think phone lines carry a lot more than 5 volts, I think in New Zealand they operate on 76 volts. Plugging a 4.5V or 6V cell phone into the phone line might burn it out and you'll never be able to use it.
